The term of office for the (Lord) Mayor is 5 years.
You are entitled to vote if you are at least 16 years old on election day. You must also be German or a national of a member state of the European Community and have lived in the municipality since at least the 16th day before the election, or have your main residence if you have more than one residence, or otherwise usually reside there and have no residence outside the municipality.
In order to vote, you must be entered in the relevant electoral roll or have a polling card.
The person who receives more than half of the valid votes is elected mayor. If no candidate achieves an absolute majority, a run-off election is usually held on the 2nd Sunday after the election between the two candidates with the highest number of votes.
Election day is always a Sunday.
You are eligible to vote if you are German or German within the meaning of Article 116 (1) of the Basic Law or a national of a member state of the European Community on election day, have reached the age of sixteen and have lived in the municipality since at least the 16th day before the election, have your main residence in the case of several residences or otherwise usually reside in the municipality.
Eligible voters can take part in the election of the mayor or mayoress either by postal vote or by voting in a polling station.
