You can stand for election to the European elections under certain conditions. You must first be eligible to vote.

If you have German citizenship, you are eligible to vote if you also have German citizenship on election day. You must also be of legal age on election day. However, you are not eligible to vote if you lose your right to vote or your eligibility to vote due to a court decision or if you are not allowed to hold public office.

If you are a citizen of the European Union, you are eligible to vote if you have a residence or habitual abode in Germany. You must also be a citizen of a member state of the European Union and at least 18 years old on election day. You lose your eligibility to vote if you have been disqualified from voting in Germany or your country of origin or if your eligibility has been revoked by a court decision. You are also ineligible if you are not allowed to hold public office in Germany due to a court decision.

Identity card or foreign identity document, if applicable

You are eligible to vote if

• you are a German national or a national of a member state of the European Union and
• have reached the age of 18.

In addition, you must not be disqualified from voting.

Your eligibility is recorded in the official register of residents.

If this is not the case and you believe that you are still eligible to vote, please contact the relevant municipal administration.

  • as a citizen of a member state of the European Union with residence in Germany or habitual residence in Germany
• Not eligible for election if you are a German citizen, if:
  • excluded from the right to vote or
  • not eligible by court decision or not qualified to hold public office,
• EU citizens are not eligible if:
  • excluded from the right to vote in Germany or
  • excluded from the right to vote in their country of origin or
  • is ineligible or ineligible to hold public office in Germany as a result of a court decision, or
  • has been deprived of the right to stand for election in the country of origin due to a civil or criminal decision
