You must notify the relevant registration office of any change of main residence.
If you have two or more apartments in Germany, you must declare to the registration office which of these apartments is your main apartment. The others are then automatically your secondary residences. A person can only ever have one main residence.
The main dwelling is the dwelling you use most, i.e. the dwelling where you stay most often. If you are married and do not live permanently apart from your family, this is the family's predominantly used dwelling. The same applies to registered civil partnerships. Minors have their main residence in the predominantly used home of the person entitled to custody. If the persons entitled to custody live separately, the main residence of the minor is the residence predominantly used by one of the persons entitled to custody.
The determination of the main residence has important consequences, for example, the jurisdiction of many authorities is based on this and you exercise your right to vote there.
You must personally notify the competent office of the change of your main residence.
Depending on the offer of the competent office, it may be possible to dispense with filling in a form and to receive the data directly. You then confirm the accuracy of the data on a printout by signing it.
The address of your new main residence will be noted on your identity card.
Please note that when you change your main residence, you must also have the address or place of residence changed in your documents.
