In order to obtain extended information about specific individuals, you must demonstrate a legitimate interest.

You will receive information about the surname, first names, doctor's degree, current addresses and, if the person is deceased, a reference to this.

In addition, you will receive information on previous names, date and place of birth and, if born abroad, also the country, marital status, limited to whether or not married or in a civil partnership, current nationalities, previous addresses, date of moving in and moving out, surname and first names and address of the legal representative, surname and first names and address of the spouse or civil partner, date and place of death and, if the person died abroad, also the country.

As the person requesting extended information from the population register, you are obliged to inform the person in question that extended information from the population register has been obtained. With regard to the fulfillment of information obligations under Article 14 of the General Data Protection Regulation in connection with the processing of personal data on the basis of the information from the population register, please note the requirements of Section 45 (2) of the Federal Registration Act.

It is necessary to provide sufficient information about the person you are looking for so that they can be clearly identified and confusion is ruled out. These are

• family name
• Former names
• first names
• date of birth
• gender or
• an address.

If identification is not possible on the basis of the information provided, no information will be provided.

You must identify yourself.

You can identify yourself with:

• your identity card or
• your passport

In addition, you must always enclose proof(s) to substantiate a legitimate interest and the corresponding purpose.

The following requirements must be met:

• You must be able to credibly demonstrate a legitimate interest in the provision of information.
• The term "legitimate interest" here includes any interest of a legal, economic or non-material nature that is to be recognized as worthy of protection.
  A legal interest exists, for example, if the data is required for legal prosecution (e.g. assertion or enforcement of legal claims) or for legal defense.
• The person you are looking for is clearly identified by your details.
• The extended information will not be provided if an information block is entered in the register of residents or a conditional block is in place and the provision of information could put the person concerned at risk.

Personal application

The following procedure applies when applying in person:

• An appointment may be required to apply in person.
• You must present your identity card or passport.
• You pay the fee directly when applying at the residents' registration office.

Written application

A written application is made as follows:

• For a written application, first transfer the fee.
• Then send your application with a copy of your bank statement or a bank transfer receipt.
• The response to the information will be sent to the applicant immediately after processing in written form only.

Online application:

You can also apply for extended information from the population register online.

The fees are charged regardless of the success of the search. The municipal register of residents only contains data on natural persons. Information on companies or commercial enterprises can be obtained from the trade register. If you would like to obtain information about a person from the population register but cannot prove a legitimate interest, you can apply for a simple population register information request. This contains less information about the person you are looking for.
