In order to obtain information from the population register, it is necessary to provide sufficient information about the person in question so that they can be clearly identified and any confusion can be ruled out. The required information is
- family name
- Former names
- First name(s)
- date of birth
- gender or
- an address.
Information about a third person (simple or extended) will not be provided if there is a block on access or a conditional block and the provision of information could put the person concerned at risk.
In addition, a declaration must be made that the data will not be used for advertising purposes or address trading.
The information can also be provided automatically.
You must identify yourself.
You can identify yourself with:
- your identity card or
- your passport.
The following requirements must be met:
- the person you are looking for must be clearly identifiable on the basis of your details; this means that you already have data on the person concerned; this is usually:
- the first name and surname,
- the date of birth
- the gender or
- an address.
- If you use the data for commercial purposes, you must specify this.
- You may not use the data for advertising or address trading purposes and must declare this when making the request.
- In the case of extended information from the population register, you must demonstrate a legitimate interest.
Personal application:
Apply in person as follows:
- An appointment may be required.
- You must present your identity card or passport.
- If a fee is payable, you pay this directly at the Residents' Registration Office when you apply.
Written application:
The written application has the following procedure:
- Please first transfer the fee, if applicable.
- Then send your application and, if applicable, a copy of the bank statement or transfer receipt.
- The reply to the information will be sent to the applicant immediately after processing in written form only.
Online application:
- You can also apply for information from the population register online. When applying digitally, you must authenticate yourself with your electronic ID card, eID card or electronic residence permit (eAT).
The fees are charged regardless of the success of the search.
The municipal register of residents only contains data on natural persons. Information on companies or commercial enterprises can be obtained from the trade register.
It is possible that the data of the person you are looking for is subject to an information block. The registration authority will then check on a case-by-case basis whether your interest in the information outweighs the confidentiality interest of the person you are looking for. If you require more detailed information, you can apply for extended information from the population register. To do so, you must provide evidence of your legitimate interest.
