Anyone who wants to drive a motor vehicle in Germany needs a driving license. The driver's license serves as proof of possession of the relevant driving permits.
Driving licenses are divided into certain classes. Driving licenses for categories AM, A, A1, A2, B, BE, L and T are issued for an unlimited period. For categories C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE, the license is issued for a maximum of five years.
To obtain your driver's license for the first time, you must complete training at a driving school and pass a theoretical driving test.
Note: You should apply for your driver's license as soon as you start training at the driving school.
You can submit the necessary application to the driving license authority responsible for your place of residence at the earliest six months before reaching the minimum age for the desired driving license category.
You can take the theory test three months at the earliest.
If you fail this test, you can usually retake it after two weeks at the earliest. The number of retakes is not limited.
