Naturalization gives you German citizenship and makes you an equal citizen of the Federal Republic of Germany with all rights and obligations.
Among other things, you can exercise your right to vote in the federal states and in the Bundestag, enjoy freedom of movement in the European Union as a citizen of the Union and can also travel to many countries outside Europe without a visa.
If you were born in Germany and your parents are stateless and therefore in possession of a travel document for stateless persons, you may, under certain conditions, be entitled to acquire German citizenship through naturalization and thus acquire German citizenship.
To do so, you must have been born in the territory of the Federal Republic of Germany to stateless parents, have resided legally and permanently in Germany for at least five years and have submitted the application before the age of 21.
Entitlement is excluded if you have been sentenced to more than five years' imprisonment or a juvenile sentence.
If you are under investigation on suspicion of a criminal offence, the naturalization procedure must be suspended until the proceedings have been concluded.
Naturalization takes effect when the naturalization certificate is issued.
The competent authority is the citizenship authority in your place of residence.
- Travel document for stateless persons
- valid residence permit
- birth certificate
- For persons under the age of 16: Proof of legal representation only required if this is not provided by law by the custodial parents.
You must have submitted an application for naturalization.
You must also meet the following legal requirements:
- You must be capable of acting, i.e. at least 16 years old or legally represented.
- You must have been stateless since birth.
- You must have been born in Germany (birth in a German airplane or on a German ship also fulfills this requirement).
- You have been legally and permanently resident in Germany for at least five years.
- You have not been sentenced to more than five years imprisonment or a juvenile sentence.
- You have submitted your application for naturalization before your 21st birthday.
After receiving your application, the competent authority will check whether you meet the requirements for naturalization and will involve other authorities / departments in the process.
If the requirements are met, a naturalization certificate will be issued at the end of the procedure.
The naturalization certificate will be handed over to you personally.
When you receive the naturalization certificate, you acquire German citizenship.
