You can enrol your child at a secondary school if they have successfully completed elementary school.
The secondary school is a school of extended joint learning. It works with children and young people of all abilities and keeps career decisions open for as long as possible. Due to their special pedagogical concept, secondary schools are almost always tied all-day schools. Secondary schools cater for a wide range of life and career prospects: here, pupils are prepared for both vocational training and university entrance qualifications. Teaching in the secondary school is particularly committed to individual support.
The secondary school comprises grades 5 to 10 of the lower secondary level. The secondary school does not have its own upper school. However, it offers the security of a predictable school career up to the Abitur through binding cooperation with the upper school of the Gymnasium, Gesamtschule or Berufskolleg.
All lower secondary level qualifications that can also be obtained at the Hauptschule, Realschule, Gesamtschule and Gymnasium can be obtained at the Sekundarschule:
- the Hauptschulabschluss
- the Hauptschulabschluss after grade 10
- the intermediate school leaving certificate (Fachoberschulreife) after year 10
The intermediate school leaving certificate (Fachoberschulreife) also entitles the holder to attend the upper secondary level of a grammar school, comprehensive school or corresponding full-time vocational college courses under certain conditions or with certain achievements. These requirements differ slightly depending on the organizational form of the secondary school.
The head teacher decides on admission to a secondary school.
- Semi-annual report of the 4th grade
- Birth certificate of the child (original and copy)
- Registration form issued by the elementary school
- Recommendation from the elementary school for the future type of school

- Pupils or their legal guardians can submit their application via the Schüler Online internet portal (www.schueleranmeldung.de).
- The respective school decides on the registration and informs the parties involved of the decision via the internet portal and in writing.
- Please note that even in the case of online registration, a personal appointment at the school is necessary for the head teacher to decide whether to admit your child.
