Is your child finishing the 4th grade of elementary school and transferring to a secondary school for the new school year? It is recommended that you take advantage of the counseling services offered by the elementary school you attend and, if applicable, those of the secondary school.
In North Rhine-Westphalia there are the following types of secondary schools:
- Hauptschule
- Realschule
- grammar school
- comprehensive school
- secondary school
- Special school
The elementary school recommends school types that appear suitable for your child with the half-year report of the 4th grade. However, this recommendation is not binding, which means that you as parents can register your child at the school of your choice.
The head teacher decides on admission to a secondary school
For counseling at the secondary school:
- Semi-annual report of the 4th grade
- Birth certificate of the child (original and copy)
- Recommendation from the elementary school for the future type of school
- identity cards of the legal guardians
- Proof of sole custody, if applicable
- If applicable, power of attorney and copy of the identity card of the parent/guardian who is unable to attend the registration in person.
Your child is transferring from elementary school to secondary school for the next school year.
- Pupils or their legal guardians can submit their application via the Schüler Online internet portal (www.schueleranmeldung.de).
- The respective school decides on the registration and informs the parties involved of the decision via the internet portal and in writing.
- Please note that even in the case of online registration, a personal appointment at the school is necessary for the school management to decide whether to admit your child.
- Before pupils make the transition from elementary school to secondary school, parents can take advantage of counseling opportunities at the schools.
- Parents can use the counseling services of both the elementary school they attend and the secondary schools.
- Secondary schools include Hauptschulen, Realschulen, Gymnasien, Gesamtschulen, Sekundarschulen and Förderschulen.
