The funeral allowance is paid to anyone who has covered the costs of the funeral of the deceased. It amounts to

• for persons entitled to a pension:

  • 874.00 euros (from 01.07.17: 891 euros)

  • 1,745.00 euros if the death is the result of an injury (from 01.07.17: 1,778 euros)

• for injured persons not entitled to a pension:

  • 1,745.00 euros if the death is the result of an injury (from 01.07.17: 1,778 euros)

The costs of the funeral are initially paid from the funeral allowance to the person who arranged the funeral. This also applies if the costs of the funeral were paid from public funds.
If there is a surplus, the spouse, partner, children, parents, step-parents, foster parents, grandchildren, grandparents, siblings and siblings' children are entitled to receive the benefit in turn if they were living in the same household as the deceased at the time of death.

If there are no such beneficiaries, the surplus will not be paid out.

• Death is always considered to be the result of an injury if an injured party dies from a condition that was legally recognized as the result of an injury and for which a pension was awarded at the time of death.

You can apply for the funeral costs at the relevant office.

If you are unable to visit the relevant office (e.g. for health reasons), send an informal application and enclose a copy of the required documents.

The funeral costs are usually paid out immediately upon application.

• Benefits to be granted on the basis of other statutory provisions (e.g. death benefits from health insurance or civil servants' pensions) are offset against the funeral allowance.
• If an injured person dies as a result of an injury outside his/her permanent place of residence, the necessary costs for the repatriation of the body will be reimbursed. This does not apply if the death occurred during a stay abroad. In this case, however, you can apply for assistance.
