You declare your resignation from a church or other religious or ideological community under public law to the local court in whose district you reside. You can make the declaration to the local court verbally (recorded by the clerk of the local court) or have your resignation notarized by a notary and send it to the local court in writing (for details, see the information in the text on leaving the church).
You will receive a certificate of withdrawal for your records immediately after submitting the declaration. The certificate will also state when your declaration took effect.
With the effective declaration of resignation, all rights and obligations based on your personal affiliation to the church, religious or ideological community cease to apply under state law. The obligation to pay church tax ends at the end of the month in which the declaration of withdrawal from the church becomes effective.
Please note in this context: The cessation of rights and obligations (in particular the obligation to pay church tax) only depends on the date on which your declaration becomes effective, not the date on which the certificate is issued. The certificate only serves as proof of your resignation.
You do not need to submit any further documents for the certificate of withdrawal.
A valid identity card must be presented for the declaration of resignation (for details, see the information in the text on leaving the church).
