Interpreters are generally sworn and translators are authorized for language translation for judicial and public prosecution purposes in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The work of interpreters includes oral and written translation, that of translators only the written translation of a language.

The Presidents of the Higher Regional Courts of North Rhine-Westphalia keep a joint register of sworn interpreters and authorized translators, which can be inspected by anyone.

The entry in the list is made with the application for general swearing-in or authorization. The following must be included in the register

• Name,
• address,
• telecommunications connections,
• profession,
• any additional qualifications and
• the respective language.

The data required for this purpose may be collected and stored. The directory may be entered in automated retrieval procedures and published on the Internet.

If you are a sworn interpreter or authorized translator in North Rhine-Westphalia, you will be listed in a register. You must apply for registration. You submit the application together with the application for general swearing-in or authorization. Registration is dependent on the general swearing-in or authorization taking place.
