If you are looking for ground monuments and archaeological excavations, you must have permission to do so.
Excavations for potential archaeological monuments require a permit, as graves, wall remains, pottery, tools and animal bones in particular can provide important information about periods far in the past.
The application for an excavation permit must be submitted to the higher monument authority:
- The district government is responsible for excavations that affect the area of independent towns in the administrative district.
- The respective district administrations are responsible for excavations that are located exclusively in the area of district municipalities.
The decision on the application is made in consultation with the specialist archaeology office of the Landschaftsverband Westfalen-Lippe.

Attachments to speed up the processing of the application:
- A plan showing the area under investigation,
- details of the district, parcel and parcels of land and
- details of the equipment and tools to be used (metal probes, spades, etc.).
- You submit an application to the higher monument authority.
- After your application has been checked, you will receive a permit, which you must carry with you.
- Searches for ground monuments and archaeological excavations are subject to authorization
