If you want to practice the profession of child and adolescent psychotherapist in Germany without restrictions, you need a state license, the Approbation.
After successfully completing your training at a state-recognized training center for child and adolescent psychotherapy, you can be granted a license to practice as a child and adolescent psychotherapist, provided the other legal requirements are met. Once your license has been granted, you are entitled to practice the profession of child and adolescent psychotherapist in Germany independently and on your own responsibility.
The license is granted for an unlimited period of time and is valid for the entire Federal Republic of Germany.
- Proof of identity
- Birth certificate or a current extract from the parents' family register
- If applicable, marriage certificate/registered civil partnership (proof in case of name change)
- Curriculum vitae in tabular form
- Federal Central Register extract, which must not have been issued more than one month prior to submission (document type O)
- Certificate of state examination for child and adolescent psychotherapists
- Declaration as to whether criminal proceedings are pending against the applicant or a criminal investigation by the public prosecutor's office
- Medical certificate, which must not be older than one month, stating that the applicant is not medically unfit to practise the profession
The license to practice as a child and adolescent psychotherapist is granted upon application if you:
- have completed the prescribed training and passed the state examination,
- have not been guilty of any conduct that makes you unworthy or unreliable to practise the profession
- are not unfit in terms of health to practise the profession,
- have the necessary knowledge of the German language to exercise the profession.
Is based on the respective administrative fee schedule of the federal state or on the fee statutes of the authorities responsible under federal state law.
You can apply for a license to practice at the competent state authority.
- You submit the application for licensure including all required documents to the competent authority
- The competent licensing authority will check the completeness of the documents submitted and whether the legal requirements can be adequately demonstrated.
- Missing or insufficient evidence will be requested by the competent licensing authority if necessary.
- The competent licensing authority will check the licensing requirements.
- Once the examination has been successfully completed, you will receive a certificate of licensure either against acknowledgement of receipt or with a certificate of service.
The processing time varies between the competent licensing authorities of the federal states.
