You can only apply for recognition as a test engineer for fire protection if you

• have completed a degree course in architecture, structural engineering, civil engineering or a degree course with a focus on fire protection at a German university or an equivalent course at a foreign university or have completed training for at least the higher fire department level
• are already a state-recognized expert or state-recognized expert for fire protection testing by decision of the North Rhine-Westphalia Chamber of Civil Engineers or the NRW Chamber of Architects and
• have at least five years of experience as a state-approved expert or state-approved expert for fire safety testing in the fire safety planning and execution of buildings or their testing, in particular of special buildings of various types with a higher degree of fire safety difficulty

The recognition procedure is subject to a fee.

If you are recognized as a test engineer for fire protection, the building supervisory authorities can assign you all or part of the fire protection testing in the building permit procedure.

Recognition expires when you reach the age of 70.

• Details of the branch office
• Curriculum vitae with full details of professional career up to the date of application
• Proof that, in the event of recognition, liability insurance with minimum cover of 500,000 euros for personal injury and 250,000 euros for property damage and financial loss exists
• Proof of completion of a course of study in architecture, structural engineering, civil engineering or a course of study with a focus on fire protection at a German university or an equivalent course of study at a foreign university or proof of completion of training for at least the higher fire department technical service
• A copy of the certificate from the North Rhine-Westphalia Chamber of Architects or the North Rhine-Westphalia Chamber of Civil Engineers regarding recognition as a state-approved expert or state-approved expert for fire protection testing
• Proof of at least five years' experience as a state-recognized expert or state-recognized expert for fire protection testing in the fire protection planning and execution of buildings or their testing, in particular of special buildings of various types with a higher degree of fire protection difficulty.
• Declaration that there are no grounds for refusal in accordance with Section 23 (2) BauPrüfVO.

• Notification from the NRW Chamber of Civil Engineers or the NRW Chamber of Architects regarding recognition as a state-approved expert or state-approved expert for fire protection testing
• At least a further 5 years of professional experience
• Proof of sufficient liability insurance
• Proof of a university degree in certain courses of study

• Application in text form with the required application documents to the recognition authority
• The recognition authority issues an acknowledgement of receipt (with notification of the processing deadline).
• Review of the application documents and examination of the recognition requirements by the recognition authority (additional requirements if necessary)
• Decision on recognition
• Presentation of certificate / declaration of commitment
• Entry in the list of test engineers for fire protection

The application documents can also be submitted electronically.

• Fire safety inspection engineers can be assigned the task of fire safety inspections by building authorities (assignment of inspections by the relevant building supervisory authority)
• Responsible for the recognition of fire safety test engineers: Ministry for Regional Identity, Communities and Local Government, Building and Gender Equality of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia (MHKBG NRW)
• Eligible to apply are state-recognized experts for fire protection testing who have gained at least a further five years of professional experience since their recognition
• The MHKBG NRW maintains a list of test engineers for structural analysis
