If you are highly qualified in your profession or a graduate of a state university, you can obtain a permanent settlement permit under certain conditions. You can find more information here.

If you are a highly qualified foreign national with a professional qualification, in special cases you can obtain a permanent settlement permit immediately after obtaining your visa.

You can obtain a settlement permit that is not restricted in terms of time and place if you are a graduate of a

  • a German state university,
  • state-recognized German university or a comparable
  • comparable German educational institution.

The following have a right to family reunification

  • Your underage children,
  • your husband or wife and
  • your life partner.

You may also be gainfully employed.

Nationals of European Union (EU) member states have access to the German labor market due to their right to freedom of movement. They can be self-employed in Germany. The same applies to other nationals of the European Economic Area (EEA) and Swiss nationals.

For nationals of Bulgaria and Romania, transitional regulations for the free movement of workers and freedom to provide services still apply. They must obtain a work permit from the relevant employment agency before taking up employment.

Integration course: Highly qualified persons are not entitled to attend an integration course.

Erforderliche Unterlagen

  • Proof that there are no grounds for deportation against you
  • Proof that you do not jeopardize or impair the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany
  • Proof that your integration into the living conditions of the Federal Republic of Germany is assured
  • Proof that you have no criminal record
  • Proof that you have been in possession of a residence permit for 2 years
  • Proof of paid pension insurance contributions or payments to a comparable pension scheme
  • Proof that you are allowed to work and that you have the necessary permits to do so
  • Proof of sufficient knowledge of German and basic knowledge of the German legal and social system
  • Proof of sufficient living space for yourself and your family

Voraussetzungen

The requirements for a settlement permit are:

  • Your livelihood is secured without you drawing on public funds.
  • There are no grounds for deportation against you.
  • Your stay does not jeopardize or impair the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany.
  • You belong to the following groups of people:
    • Scientists or academics with special expertise
    • Teachers or academic staff in a prominent position
  • Their integration into the living conditions of the Federal Republic of Germany is assured.
  • You have sufficient knowledge of German and basic knowledge of the German legal and social system.
  • You have paid contributions to the statutory pension insurance scheme or another pension scheme with comparable benefits for 24 months.
  • You have sufficient living space for yourself and your family.
  • You have held one of the following residence permits for 2 years:
    • Residence permit for the purpose of employment
    • Residence permit for qualified tolerated persons for the purpose of employment
    • EU Blue Card
    • Residence permit for the purpose of self-employment
  • You have a job appropriate to your qualification.

Before entering Germany, you must apply for a national visa in your home country.

After entering Germany, you must apply for a residence permit in writing at the immigration office before your visa expires.
