If the data in your identity card is no longer up to date, you must have this changed as soon as possible.

Your data on your identity card must always be up to date. You can apply for a new one at your identity card authority at your main place of residence. This is usually the citizens' registration office.

You can also apply to any other identity card authority if you can show good cause. Please clarify the recognition of your reason in advance with the authority you have chosen. There is a lack of jurisdiction surcharge. This means that you will have to pay more for your new identity card.

If you change your address, you do not need a new identity card, but you must still present it at the Bürgeramt at your main place of residence. When you do so, the authorities will note the new address on a sticker on the back of the ID card. They will also change the address in the chip of the ID card.

You are subject to the identification obligation if you

• have German citizenship
• have reached the age of 16 and
• are registered in Germany.

For the application outside your main residence:

• You must be able to show an important reason why you are not applying for the identity card at the identity card authority at your main place of residence.

• EUR 37.00 for applicants aged 24 and over
• EUR 22.80 for applicants under 24 years of age
• EUR 13.00 Surcharge for applications submitted outside office hours or to authorities without jurisdiction
• EUR 30.00 surcharge for issuance by consular or diplomatic representation abroad

Change of address: free of charge

You must appear in person at the identity card office.

In the event of a change of address: Contact

• the identity card authority at your place of residence
  • if you are moving within the municipality and
  • when moving abroad,
• the identity card authority at the new place of residence
  • if you are moving to another municipality.

The change of address on your identity card will be made immediately.

For all other changes, a new ID card will be produced. Collection is usually possible after 2 weeks.
