Veterinarians can only work in Hesse after obtaining the German license to practice medicine or obtaining a permit for the temporary or limited exercise of the veterinary profession.

By taking up your activity in Hesse, you are a member of the State Chamber of Veterinary Surgeons of Hesse by law.

You are obliged to register with the Chamber within 4 weeks.

The main tasks of the Chamber include:

• to represent the professional interests of the members,
• to promote the education and training of its members, and
• to supervise the fulfilment of professional obligations.

As a member you have to pay an annual fee. This is levied by the Chamber in order to cover its expenses. For the first calendar year after you have received the license to practice medicine or the professional license, you are exempt from the contributions.

Hint: If you relocate your veterinary activity or residence (without being a veterinarian) abroad, you can remain a voluntary member.

• Certificate of appointment or licence to practise medicine or certificate of authorisation to practise veterinary medicine
• Doctoral certificate or certificates of authorisation to use academic degrees, proof of the award of professional official or official titles
• Documents authorising the use of a territorial, sub-area or additional designation

Hint: You must present the documents as officially certified copies.

You must

• Veterinarian
• and be in possession of a German license to practice medicine
• or have a temporary or limited permit to practice the veterinary profession (issued in Hesse by the Regierungspräsidium Gießen) and
• practise as a veterinarian in Hesse, or
• if you do not practice your profession, you are resident in Hesse.

The processing time depends on the complete submission of the required documents.
