If you or a relative need to be transported in connection with the treatment of an illness because this journey cannot be carried out privately, you will need an ambulance transport or a patient journey (e.g. order by the attending physician).
Ambulance transport includes journeys in the event of illness requiring the accompaniment of medical staff or the special equipment of an ambulance.
An ambulance ride is any other trip made by a sick person, such as a taxi.
If you or a relative require a transport service in connection with a health insurance service for compelling medical reasons, the health insurance company will cover the travel costs for
- services provided on an inpatient basis,
- rescue trips to the hospital even if inpatient treatment is not required,
- other journeys by insured persons who require professional assistance or the special facilities of an ambulance during the journey or for whom this is to be expected due to their condition, and
- Travel by insured persons to outpatient treatment, to pre- or post-inpatient treatment or to outpatient surgery in hospital, if this avoids or shortens a full or partial inpatient hospital treatment offered in itself or if it is not feasible.
In case of doubt, you must pay for transport services to outpatient treatment that you arrange without consultation with your health insurance company. In any case, please clarify with your health insurance company beforehand whether and to what extent it will cover the costs. If you are currently receiving benefits from a social welfare provider, it is also worth asking there.
Attention: Do not confuse ambulance transport with "Ambulance / rescue service alert", which you order in an acute emergency (see service description in the Hessen-Finder: "Rettungsdienst").
The ambulance is intended for people who need medical care and cannot use a taxi due to their condition.
The driver of the ambulance needs the following to settle accounts with your health insurance company:
- Your name, address and date of birth
- Address of the health insurance fund
- if applicable, number of the exemption card
- Your signature on a billing document
- and the doctor's prescription
You pay the co-payment according to § 61 Fünftes Buch Sozialgesetzbuch (SGB V) in the amount of a maximum of 10.00 euros, but within your load limit according to § 62 SGB V. Further information can be found on the website of the Federal Ministry of Health.
Get a "prescription for patient transport" from your doctor in charge, which you carry with you on every trip and show to the driver. After the journey, submit the medical prescriptions to your health insurance company for billing.
Ambulance transports are carried out by the known emergency services and must be requested from the responsible Central Control Centre; this can also be reached by telephone under the service number 19222 or the emergency number 112 .
Ambulance rides are carried out by local taxi companies (request directly from the company).
For ambulance transports or patient trips, please contact your doctor. Your doctor will issue you with a corresponding prescription, regardless of the means of transport to be chosen.
For transport to outpatient treatment, the approval of your health insurance company is also required.
