The performance of the students is evaluated by grades ("very good" to "unsatisfactory") or points (15 to 0 points), insofar as the achievements are significant for the issuance of certificates and corresponding evidence. The same applies to the assessment of the work and social behaviour of pupils in certificates. An upward or downward trend can be characterised by a note or, with the exception of certificates, by a plus or minus in brackets.
The assessment is based on the oral, written, practical and other achievements that the student has performed in connection with the lessons. The knowledge and skills imparted in the classroom are decisive for the performance evaluation.
At the beginning of a school year, pupils and parents should be informed about the aspects according to which their performance is assessed. Before the certificate conferences, the grades should be justified to the pupils by the subject teacher in a way that makes sense and is helpful to them. In addition, pupils must be informed at least once every school semester about their level of performance in oral and other achievements.
Even in the case of inclusive schooling, the teachers who last taught the pupil in the respective subject are responsible for the evaluation of individual pupil achievements and for the overall evaluation of the achievements achieved during the assessment period. The assessment of work and social behaviour for the assessment period is carried out by the class conference.
In Hesse, the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs is responsible for the school system.
