Music schools are educational institutions whose main tasks are to provide a basic musical education, to train the next generation of amateur and amateur musicians, to identify and promote talented individuals and to prepare them for professional studies.
Fees are charged for lessons at music schools and for the provision of musical instruments; these are set out in the music school fee regulations.
Information on music schools in Hesse can be found, for example, on the website of the Association of German Music Schools (Verband deutscher Musikschulen, Landesverband Hessen e. V.).
Cooperation between general education schools and music schools
In Hessen, cooperation between music schools and general education schools is particularly supported: Since the 2000/2001 school year, the state of Hesse has been funding cooperation projects between general education schools and music schools at over 30 locations in Hesse, particularly in years 5 and 6. The projects are primarily intended to provide access to music-making for children who would have little chance of attending a music school due to their circumstances at home.
Since the 2008/09 school year, 70 elementary school have also been taking part in the pilot project "An instrument for every child" (JeKi Hessen). JeKi Hessen supports the purchase of instruments and instrumental lessons for children interested in music by music school teachers at these schools.
For "musical elementary school", "schools with a focus on music" (lower secondary level), "KulturSchulen Hessen" (secondary schools) and "schools with special musical support" (primary and secondary schools), cooperation with music schools is an essential element in promoting musical practice at general education schools.
