Children are among the most vulnerable road users and therefore deserve our special consideration. Primary school children – especially school beginners – are particularly at risk in road traffic. Traffic accidents often occur because the children are not yet up to the demands of today's traffic conditions. Although the safe way to school is an integral part of teaching at school, it should be practiced with the children at an early stage. Caregivers should always set a good example and observe the traffic rules – even as pedestrians – because children learn more through their exemplary behavior than through constant hints and admonitions.
School route plans are drawn up in the schools, bus, pupil and parent guides can be set up.
Road safety education at school takes place in cooperation with the Landesverkehrswacht Hessen and the Unfallkasse Hessen (UKH). As the statutory accident insurance institution, UKH is responsible for accidents on the way to school.
The road traffic authority or the public order office is the contact person for all questions of the road traffic regulations (StVO) and responsible for all traffic regulations as well as the examination of school route safety.
