According to the Animal Health Act, you must report certain animal diseases immediately.
This should make it possible to detect and combat epidemics in good time so that they do not spread further.
Tip: The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture provides you with a list of notifiable animal diseases.
They must not only report the outbreak of a disease, but also the suspicion of an outbreak.
According to the Animal Health Act, you must report an animal disease if you:
- are the keeper of the animal
- represent the holder
- temporarily supervise the animal
- have to deal professionally with animals, for example
- Employees in the livestock trade, cattle transporters
- fish farmers,
- farriers and hoof keepers,
- workers in hunting, fishing or sheep farming,
- Persons engaged in the practice of veterinary medicine
- heads of an investigation body, or
- Persons who artificially inseminate animals, test their performance, castrate animals that slaughter commercially
Attention: You are committing an administrative offence if you do not immediately report the suspicion of an animal disease or even conceal it. The animal disease can then spread, for example, via the animal trade or persons. In this case, you can expect a fine of up to 30,000.00 euros. In addition, you will not be paid compensation for your own animal losses.
You must immediately report the epizootic disease or your suspicion of an outbreak of an epizootic disease. Notify the competent veterinary office by telephone or in person. The notification can be made informally.
Provide information on:
- suspected disease
- symptoms
- Species, number, location and husbandry of animals
- Owner of the animals
- possibly: Affected neighbouring stocks
- Actions you take
- the animals were bought or sold
- if necessary, keeping of other animal species
They must do everything possible to prevent the spread of the disease: for example, they must keep sick and suspicious animals away from places where there is a risk of infection with foreign animals.
The competent veterinary office will investigate your suspicion report. It first orders that the sick and suspicious animals be separated from other susceptible animals and, if necessary, confined. Passenger and vehicle traffic on your farm will be restricted. If the suspicion of an animal disease is confirmed, the competent veterinary office initiates the necessary countermeasures. These can be, for example, the examination, the quarantine or the killing of the animals.
For animal losses due to animal diseases, you can receive compensation under the Animal Health Act. Further information can be found in the service description "Applying for compensation from the Tierseuchenkasse".
If you suspect that an animal disease may have broken out, report this immediately by telephone or in person to the competent veterinary office of your district or independent city.
