Closed Substance Cycle Waste Management Act (KrWG)
Local statutes of the districts and independent cities (usually separated into waste disposal statutes and waste fee statutes, published on the Internet or in the official gazette/district gazette)
The waste disposal of private households and thus also of garden waste from private households is the responsibility of the districts and independent cities as public waste disposal authorities.
The disposal of garden waste from private households is the responsibility of the districts and independent cities. Regulations on this are laid down in the individual waste disposal statutes and fee statutes.
These include information on waste fees, waste containers (organic waste garbage cans, ordering options), waste calendars (collection intervals), existing collection and delivery systems for garden waste.
If the public waste disposal authorities do not yet offer an organic waste garbage can, there are alternative disposal options in the bring system (such as the possibility of dropping off garden waste at recycling centers or container services) and in some cases the use of an organic waste garbage can from private providers (commercial or non-profit collection).
In addition to the disposal of garden waste in the organic waste garbage can, most bylaws mention home composting as an option for recycling garden waste. If it can be proven that they can recycle their own waste by composting it on their own property, citizens can be exempted from the obligation to connect to the organic waste garbage can.
The separate collection and subsequent recycling of garden waste has several advantages for the environment: it reduces the amount of residual waste and simplifies the treatment of residual waste. Separate collection simplifies the high-quality recycling of garden waste and enables the use of the humus components and nutrients it contains.
Please ask the public waste disposal authority responsible for you which documents you need to submit.
Inquiry with the public waste disposal authorities required
As is the case for waste disposal in general, there is no standardized nationwide fee regulation for the disposal of garden waste by the districts and independent cities.
Information on the possible costs can be found in the respective waste fee statutes of your public waste disposal authority as well as on the homepages of commercial waste disposal companies.
- Garden waste disposal
- Regulations on the management/disposal of organic waste can be found in the individual waste disposal statutes and fee statutes of the public waste disposal authorities
- In addition to the various disposal options in the collection and/or delivery system, self-composting is often permitted by the waste disposal statutes
- Responsible: public waste management authority (the respective district or independent city of the place of residence)
You can find out whether garden waste may exceptionally not be disposed of in the organic waste garbage can or where the nearest collection point for such waste is located on the respective websites of the public waste disposal authorities (municipality, city, district or waste association). The waste consultants of the public waste disposal authorities can also provide information by telephone.
In the case of properties in outdoor areas, it is possible that there is no obligation to dispose of garden waste. In this case, the garden waste must be recycled by you. The waste consultant will also provide you with information on whether there is an obligation to dispose of your garden waste or what recycling options are available for your garden waste.
Under certain conditions, garden waste may also be incinerated as an exception. Information on whether, when and how incineration is permitted in your area and what you need to bear in mind when incinerating garden waste can be obtained from the administration of your town or municipality.
Separate regulations apply to the disposal of plant waste that is infested with plant diseases or vermin.
