If health problems occur after a vaccination that go beyond the usual extent of a vaccination reaction, a doctor, preferably the vaccinating doctor, should be consulted immediately and the public health department informed. Serious health problems after a vaccination are very rare events.
As an expression of the body's reaction to the vaccine, temporary local and general reactions may occur after vaccination, such as
- Redness, swelling or soreness at the injection site for a period of 1 - 3 days (occasionally longer)
- Fever below 39.50 C (when measured rectally), headache and aching limbs, fatigue, malaise, nausea, restlessness, swelling of the regional lymph nodes
- "Vaccination sickness" (1 - 3 weeks after vaccination), for example measles or varicella-like skin symptoms.
If health problems occur in connection with a vaccination that go beyond this, a doctor, preferably the vaccinating doctor, should be consulted.

If there is a suspicion of vaccination side effects, this must be reported immediately (within 24 hours) to the responsible health authority.
The notification form developed by the Paul Ehrlich Institute should be used for this purpose.
If the suspicion is confirmed, you can apply to the Hessian Office for Care and Social Affairs in Fulda for care in the event of vaccination damage. The office is responsible for all vaccination injuries caused by a vaccination administered in Hesse. See also the service description "Applying for care in the event of vaccination damage".
