Home slaughter is slaughter outside commercial slaughterhouses, whereby the meat may only be used in the owner's own household.
Anyone who slaughters animals must have the necessary knowledge and skills.
In the case of domestic slaughter, notification for official ante-mortem inspection for domestic or farmed ungulates shall only be made if the owner of the animal has noticed a disturbance in the general condition of the animal immediately before the intended slaughter which is not attributable to an accident that occurred immediately before.
Bovine animals, pigs, sheep, goats and other biungulates, horses and other solipeds are subject to official post-mortem inspection, which must also be carried out at home slaughter, provided that their meat is intended for human consumption. In the case of rabbits, these tests may be omitted if no characteristics are found which make the meat appear to be of concern for human consumption. Game enclosures must also be subjected to ante-mortem and post-mortem inspection.
