More than 143 communities are fighting for the rights of older people in Hesse. You can find out how they are fighting against the lack of democratic influence here!
Municipal Senior Citizens' Representations
The seemingly insoluble contradiction between the large number of older people on the one hand and their limited ability to influence democratic decision-making processes on the other led to the formation of interest groups for older people as early as the 1970s. The term "senior citizens' representatives" has become common parlance. The slowly but steadily growing number of such senior citizens' representatives – currently about 143 in Hesse – is also regarded by science and politics as the legitimate representation of older people for participation in decision-making processes in the pre-parliamentary area.
Municipal Senior Citizens' Representatives have different names – Senior Citizens' Advisory Council, Senior Citizens' Department, Senior Citizens' Forum, etc. – and are based on different principles in terms of their formation, legal form and objectives (municipal statutes, rules of procedure, guidelines or statutes). Securing common minimum standards and thus also striving for a greater assertiveness of their interests is one of the goals of the voluntary merger of the municipal senior citizens' representatives in the State Senior Citizens' Representation of Hesse (LSVH).
V. (LSVH) is a voluntary association of senior citizens' associations in Hesse that are formed in cities, municipalities and districts. It works on a voluntary basis, politically neutral, non-denominational and independent of associations; it does not pursue any economic objectives, and its members do not receive any benefits.
The following areas of responsibility fall within her area of responsibility:
- The LSVH e.V. sees itself as a representation of the interests of older people at the state level
- The state government involves LSVH e.V. in all matters of the state that affect these interests in a special way. The contact person of LSVH e.V. is the department of the Hessian state government responsible for senior citizens' policy.
- In addition to providing information in the areas of senior citizens' policy, the LSVH e.V. also sees its task in supporting existing and founding new senior citizens' representatives.
- The LSVH e.V. sees itself as a source of inspiration for senior policy issues.
