Civic engagement and civil courage in emergency situations to save fellow citizens have a special significance in Hesse. In recognition of exemplary conduct, the following awards were donated:
- Hessian Rescue Medal
- Hessian Medal for Civil Courage
- Public commendation
If a citizen saves the life of another person or averts a significant, imminent danger to the general public and thereby endangers his or her own life, he or she can be awarded the Hessian Rescue Medal for this.
Since 2009, if a citizen has stood up for the values of the Hessian Constitution or has provided assistance to another person in an emergency situation and there have been considerable personal disadvantages or dangers for him or her, he or she can be awarded the Hessian Medal for Civil Courage since 2009.
If there was no danger to the rescuer's life, a public commendation is made in the form of a certificate.
The suggestion should include a description of the rescue operation that is as accurate as possible and personal information about the rescuer.
The Hessian State Chancellery forwards the proposal to the local mayor for comment. After submission of the necessary reports, the Prime Minister of Hesse decides on the awarding of the award.
A suggestion for the award of a rescue act can be made informally to the Hessian State Chancellery.
