Do you have an unfulfilled desire to have children? Couples can receive financial support for fertility treatment.
If you as a couple have an unfulfilled desire to have children, you can apply for a state subsidy for the costs of fertility treatment. You must submit the application together as a couple and before the start of treatment. In Hesse, the subsidy is only available for the fourth treatment attempt. Exactly which treatment cycles are subsidized can vary from state to state. You must apply for the subsidy in Hesse once for the fourth treatment attempt. Only certain types of treatment are supported::
- In vitro fertilization (IVF)
- Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)
The necessity of the treatment must be certified by a doctor.
- Joint written declaration
- The declaration is part of the application form.
- You declare that you are unintentionally childless.
- You declare that you are not permanently separated.
- You declare that treatment has not yet begun.
- Please enclose the following documents with your application:
- for couples with statutory health insurance:
- Medical confirmation from the reproductive medicine center regarding the necessity of the measure and the expected cost plan for the fourth treatment attempt (form),
- Copy of identity cards (both sides) and, if applicable, current registration certificate or residence permit
- Copy of the marriage certificate or civil partnership certificate or, in the case of unmarried couples, a declaration from your doctor,
- Cost coverage or negative decision from the health insurance company.
- for privately insured persons (if applicable, persons entitled to benefits):
- Medical confirmation from the reproductive medicine center regarding the necessity of the measure and the expected cost plan for the fourth treatment attempt (form),
- Copy of identity cards (both sides) and, if applicable, current registration certificate or residence permit
- Copy of the marriage certificate or civil partnership certificate or, in the case of unmarried couples, a declaration from your doctor,
- Cost coverage or negative decision from the health insurance company/assistance center
- for couples with statutory health insurance:
Only couples are eligible. One of them must be a woman or a person who has female reproductive organs and is to carry the child to be conceived. The following couples are eligible:
- Different-sex, same-sex or diverse married couples.
- Same-sex civil partners living together in accordance with the Civil Partnership Act.
- Different-sex, same-sex or diverse couples living in a non-marital partnership.
You must also meet the following requirements:
- You live in the federal state in which you are applying for the subsidy (main residence) at the time of application and treatment.
- The age of the person who is to become pregnant is between 25 and 40.
- The age of the other person is between 25 and 50.
- You have a medical certificate of infertility.
- You meet the requirements for artificial insemination in accordance with § 27a of the Fifth Social Code (SGB V) - where applicable.
- The treatment must be carried out by a reproductive medicine center in Hesse.
- You can apply for the fertility treatment subsidy in paper form.
- You submit the application for a grant for fertility treatment together with the required documents.
- If you meet the requirements, you will receive a grant notification.
- Once you have received the grant notification, you will have the fertility treatment carried out.
- After the treatment, you must submit the application for payment of the grant within one year of receiving the grant notification.
The grant must be applied for before the start of treatment. The treatment may only be carried out after receipt of the grant notification.
The following information is available:
- The measure is funded proportionately by the federal government and the respective state.
- The federal government only supports heterosexual married and unmarried couples.
- The regulations of the individual federal states may deviate from this.

- Couples with an unfulfilled desire to have children can apply for a state subsidy for the costs of fertility treatment.

- Medical certificate for the necessity of the treatment required

- Eligible forms of treatment:
- In vitro fertilization (IVF)

- Couples must be able to carry the child themselves.
- The person carrying the child must be between 25 and 40 and the person not carrying the child must be between 25 and 50.
- Treatment can only begin after receipt of the written grant notification.
- Determination and payment of the grant must be applied for separately after the treatment.
