You can apply for the extension of your driving licence to categories D, DE, D1, D1E (colloquially bus classes). This licence shall be issued for a maximum period of five years and may be extended for a period of five years at the request of the licence holder.

You can apply for the extension of your driving licence to categories D, DE, D1, D1E.

Category D entitles you to drive motor vehicles designed and constructed for the carriage of more than 8 persons (except the driver) - even with trailers up to 750 kg maximum permissible mass. Class D1 is included.

Category D1 entitles you to drive motor vehicles in which a maximum of 16 people (except the driver) can travel and whose maximum length is 8 m – even with trailers up to 750 kg permissible total mass.

Category DE entitles you to drive combinations of a category D motor vehicle and a trailer over 750 kg maximum permissible mass. Classes BE and D1E are included here.

Category D1E entitles you to drive combinations of a motor vehicle of category D1 and a trailer over 750 kg maximum permissible mass. Class BE is included.

• Designation of a driving school
• Official proof of place and date of birth (e.g. identity card, passport), registration certificate if applicable
• a current photograph that complies with the provisions of the passport regulation (biometrics-compatible, size 45 mm x 35 mm, portrait format)
• Proof of vision according to the model of Annex 6 No. 2 to the Driving Licence Ordinance (§ 12 para. 6 and Annex 6 no. 2.1 or no. 2.2). You can have the certificate issued by an ophthalmologist, by a company or occupational physician or by a doctor of the health authority. An issued expert opinion/certificate is valid for 2 years.
• Proof of physical and mental fitness according to the content of Annex 5 to the Driving Licence Ordinance (§11 para. 9 and Annex 5 FeV). You can have the certificate drawn up by a doctor. At the time of application, the certificate must not be older than one year.

• Proof of participation in a training course in first aid
• Certificate of good conduct for submission to an authority (must not be older than 3 months at the time of application)

• Main residence in the Federal Republic of Germany
• for the D-Class you must be at least 24 years old and in previous possession of Class B. For exceptions to the minimum age, see § 10 Driving Licence Ordinance (FeV).
• for class D1 you must be at least 21 years old and in previous possession of class B. The minimum age is 18 years for persons who have completed or have completed training in the training occupation "professional driver" or "specialist in driving operation".
• for class DE you must be at least 24 years old and in previous possession of class D. For exceptions to the minimum age, see § 10 of the Driving Licence Ordinance.
• for category D1E, you must be at least 21 years old and in previous possession of class D1. The minimum age is 18 years for persons who have completed or have completed training in the training occupation "professional driver" or "specialist in driving operation".

The fee is based on the scale of charges for road transport measures in the respective version.

You must submit an application for extension to the driving licence authority responsible for you.

At the earliest six months before reaching the required minimum age, the driving licence for driving buses (D-classes) can be applied for.
