Erweiterung Fahrerlaubnis A1 oder A2

If you are in possession of motorcycle driving licence categories A 1 or A 2, you can extend them to the next higher category under certain conditions.

If you have held a category A1 or A2 driving licence for at least 2 years, passing the practical test is sufficient to upgrade to A2 or A (promotion). A theoretical test is not necessary.

A category A1 driving licence entitles you to drive motorcycles (including sidecars) with a cylinder capacity of up to 125 cm3, an engine power not exceeding 11 kW, where the power-to-weight ratio does not exceed 0,1 kW/kg, and three-wheel motor vehicles with symmetrically arranged wheels and a cylinder capacity of more than 50 cm3 in the case of internal combustion engines or a maximum design speed of more than 45 km/h and with: an output of up to 15 kW.

The category A 2 driving licence entitles you to drive motorcycles (including sidecars) with a maximum engine power of 35 kW and a power/weight ratio of not more than 0.2 kW/kg, which are not derived from a motorcycle with an engine power of more than 70 kW. Class A2 includes classes A1 and AM.

A driving licence entitles you to drive motorcycles (including sidecars) with a cylinder capacity of more than 50 cm3 or with a maximum design speed of more than 45 km/h and three-wheel motor vehicles with a power of more than 15 kW and three-wheel motor vehicles with symmetrically arranged wheels and a cylinder capacity of more than 50 cm3 in the case of internal combustion engines or a maximum design speed of more than 45 km/h and with: an output of more than 15 kW.

• Vision test certificate according to Annex 6 No. 1.1 FeV (not older than two years)
• Proof of participation in a training course in first aid

• You must hold a category A1 or A2 driving licence
• You must have your main residence in the Federal Republic of Germany
• The minimum age for class A2 is 18 years.
• The minimum age for class A is 24 years, for previous possession of A 2 the minimum age is 20 years.
• You have been in possession of a category A1 or A2 driving licence for 2 years

The fee is based on the scale of charges for road transport measures (GebOSt).

You must submit an application to your competent driving licence authority for an extension of your driving licence from A1 or A2 to A2 or A.

The driving licence is usually handed out by the driving examiner after passing the driving test. The previous driving licence must be surrendered in exchange.

Depending on the workload of your responsible driving licence authority, the processing time may take different times.
