As a German citizen, you are obliged to have an identity card from the age of 16 if you do not have a valid passport. If your ID card has been lost or stolen, please report the loss immediately to an identity card authority (Lord Mayor) or a citizens' office or to the police for your own protection. You are obliged to do so in accordance with § 27 paragraph 1 number 3 of the Identity Card Act. If you do not report the loss, you are acting in accordance with § 32 No. 7 of the Identity Card Act.
After registration, you can apply for a new identity card. If you have a valid passport, you do not need to apply for a new identity card.
If you report the theft to the identity card authority or citizens' office or the police responsible for your place of residence, the blocking of the online ID card will also be carried out.
You can also have the online ID blocked yourself by telephone. The telephone blocking hotline can be reached seven days a week around the clock on the toll-free number 116 116 from the German fixed or mobile network.
The blocking ensures that any attempt at abuse is detected immediately. After blocking, it is no longer possible to use the online ID function of your identity card or to have it read out on site.
You can only arrange for the signature function to be blocked by the provider of your signing certificate.
