If you have obtained an IB diploma at an international school and want to study in Germany, you can apply for recognition of your IB diploma as a university entrance qualification.

If you have obtained an IB diploma at an international school and want to study in Germany, you can apply for recognition of your IB diploma as a university entrance qualification. After successfully checking the requirements, you will be issued a certificate valid in Germany.

With full recognition of your IB diploma as a university entrance qualification, you can start studying all subjects at all universities and colleges in Germany. For this purpose, the number of points you have achieved in the IB program will also be converted into the German grading system.

• IBDiplom (original or certified copy)
• IBZwiping certificates of grades 11 and 12 with level information
• Grade 10 certificate before the start of the IB
• Curriculum vitae in tabular form (with complete school career)
• Copy of the front and back of an identification document (e.g. identity card) OR a current registration certificate

You have your primary residence in Hesse or want to study at a non-state university that has its headquarters

or place of study in Hesse.

An IB diploma can be recognised as a university entrance qualification if it has been acquired after attending at least twelve ascending grades at schools with full-time teaching.

In addition, the following conditions must be met:

• Among the six examination subjects of the IB, two languages must be at level A or B – among them, at least one continued foreign language must be referred to as "Language A" (from the 2013 examination Language A: Language and Literature or Language A: Literature. For students who are unable to receive instruction in their native language at their school, an appropriate School supported self-taught course may be recognized as Language A: Literature SL.) or "Language B HL" (Valid from exam 2013.);
• Among the six examination subjects of the IB must be a scientific subject (Biology, Chemistry, Physics);
  • Mathematics must be among the six examination subjects of the IB:Mathematical Methods (From examination 2006 up to and including examination 2020 Mathematics SL. IB graduates who only prove mathematics on the SL with the examination date 2021 can only be recognized for subject-specific university admission, for subjects that are not assigned to the mathematical, scientific and technical field)

  • or

    Mathematics HL* or Further Mathematics in conjunction with Mathematics HL* (* From exam 2021 Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL or Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation HL.);

• Among the six examination subjects of the IB must be a social science subject (History, Geography, Economics, Psychology, Philosophy, Social Anthropology, Business and Management, Global Politics);
• Among the six examination subjects of the IB, the sixth compulsory subject can be one of the following subjects in addition to the aforementioned subjects: Art/Design (since May 2000 called Visual Arts), Music, Theatre Arts (called Theatre from 2009 examination); Film, Literature and Performance, another modern foreign language, Latin, Classical Greek, General Chemistry, Applied Chemistry, Environmental Systems (called Environmental Systems and Societies from the 2010 examination), Computer Science, Design Technology, World Religions, Sports exercise and health science.
• Among the three IB subjects at the "Higher Level" must be either mathematics or a natural science subject (Biology, Chemistry or Physics).
• All subjects must have been taken continuously in the "IBDiploma Programme" for two years in ascending order.
• The required six subjects must be graded at least with IBNote 4. The IB grade 3 in one subject can be compensated once by at least the IBNote 5 in another subject at at least the same level of ambition if a total of at least 24 points have been achieved. The IB grade 3 in more than one subject or the IB grades 2, 1 and 0 in only one subject can never be compensated.

Note: As a German citizen with an IB diploma who has not taken the subject German at a school abroad with an IB program, you must prove that you have sufficient knowledge of German before starting your studies in Germany; what exactly this proof looks like is regulated in more detail by state regulations. The respective science ministries of the federal states or the host universities can provide you with information on this.

• 70 Euro administration fee for successful recognition of the IBDiplom as a university entrance qualification
• In case of refusal, there are no fees

• As soon as all the necessary documents have been submitted, the staff at the Hessian Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs will check whether the requirements for recognition of your IBDiplom, as decided by the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs, are met.
• If all requirements are met, a notice of recognition and a notice of costs will be issued.
• After you have sent us the IBDiplom as a certified copy by post, the notification of recognition and the notice of costs will also be sent to you by post.
• Alternatively, you can also pick up the notification of recognition and the notice of costs in person at our business premises (Hessian Ministry of Culture in Wiesbaden, Kirchgasse 2, 5th floor) by prior appointment at gregor.verhoff@kultus.hessen.de or 0611368-2322 and show your IB diploma in the original or as a certified copy.
• Please transfer the administration fee of 70 euros afterwards.
• If the requirements for recognition are not met, you will receive a notification by post informing you of this, making it clear what reasons speak against recognition and giving you alternatives on how you can obtain a university entrance qualification.

1-5 days (provided that the required documents are complete).

There are no deadlines for recognition. The university entrance qualification issued is valid indefinitely.

Within one month of its notification, an action may be brought against the decision at the Wiesbaden Administrative Court, Mainzer Straße 124, 65189 Wiesbaden, in writing or for the record of the clerk of the registry. The action must identify the plaintiff, the defendant must be the State of Hesse, represented by the Hessian Ministry of Culture, and the subject matter of the dispute. It should contain a specific request. The substantiating facts should be stated. The corresponding decision should be attached in the original or in copy.
