You can stand for election yourself in the European elections. This is linked, among other things, to your eligibility.
Under certain conditions, you can stand for election yourself as a candidate in the European elections. You must first be selectable for this.
You are eligible to be elected as a German citizen if you have reached the age of eighteen on election day. However, you are not eligible if you lose your right to vote or your eligibility due to a court decision or are not allowed to hold public office.
If you are a citizen of the Union, you are eligible if you have a place of residence or habitual residence in Germany. In addition, you must be at least 18 years old on election day. You are not eligible if you have been excluded from the right to vote in Germany or your country of origin or if you have been deprived of your eligibility due to a court decision. You are also not eligible if you are not allowed to hold public office in Germany on the basis of a court decision.
For the certificate of eligibility, the competent city or municipal administration issues a certificate of eligibility on request.
You are eligible if you stand on election day
- have German citizenship or the nationality of one of the other Member States of the European Union and, as citizens of the Union, have a residence in Germany or otherwise reside habitually, and
- have reached the age of 18.
In addition, you must not be excluded from the right to vote.
The requirements for your eligibility are usually stored in the population register. Upon request, the certificate of eligibility is issued by the competent municipal or city administration for applicants in Germany. For applicants who do not occupy an apartment in Germany and do not otherwise habitually reside there, the Federal Ministry of the Interior and for Community issues the certificate of eligibility. It must be applied for at the diplomatic or professional consular mission of the Federal Republic of Germany responsible for the place of residence of the applicant or substitute applicant, otherwise directly upon presentation of the necessary supporting documents.
