Due to the close ties between Hesse and the United Kingdom, the Hessian state government is supporting the entire process surrounding the UK's withdrawal from the European Union with a Brexit working structure. The aim is to pool existing resources in such a way that short-term solutions for Brexit-related risks can be found and competent contacts are available for key issues.
Brexit has an impact on many areas of life in Hesse. These affect citizens as well as companies and other institutions.
The United Kingdom left the European Union on February 1, 2020 on the basis of the negotiated withdrawal agreement. A transition phase was agreed until December 31, 2020. The final withdrawal took place on December 31 with the end of the transition phase. Just a few days before the deadline expired, the European Union reached a trade and cooperation agreement with the United Kingdom, an agreement on cooperation in the field of civil security and an agreement on information security.
The agreement was ratified by the European Parliament on April 28, 2021. This means that the far-reaching changes are now permanently in force.
There are still regular new developments that could have an impact on Hesse. This makes it necessary to continue to monitor and assess the impact of Brexit as well as the state of relations between the United Kingdom and the European Union. The Hessian Brexit Working Structure has taken on this task and remains available to provide information to citizens.
Inquiries about the impact of Brexit and the necessary preparatory measures are free of charge.
A dedicated staff unit in the Hessian State Chancellery coordinates all activities of the working structure.
It can be contacted on +49 611 32-113867 and by e-mail: Stabsstelle-Brexit@stk.hessen.de
