Teacher training in Hesse
Teacher training in Hesse is geared towards the different types of schools. The legal basis for teacher training is the Hessian Teacher Training Act (HLbG). According to this, there are the following teaching qualifications:
- Teaching at elementary school,
- Teacher training at Hauptschulen and Realschulen,
- Teaching at grammar schools,
- Teaching at vocational schools and
- Teaching at special schools.
Training for all teaching posts takes place at academic or artistic universities and in a 21-month preparatory service (traineeship) at study seminars and training schools. The academic training ends with the First State Examination, the pedagogical training ends with the Second State Examination for the teaching professions or an examination to acquire a teaching qualification in technical subjects.
As a rule, the general higher education entrance qualification is a prerequisite for teacher training. The Hessian Teachers' Academy decides on admission to the preparatory service.
Preparatory service (traineeship)
During the preparatory service, the knowledge, skills and abilities acquired during the course of study in subject-specific sciences, subject-specific didactics and educational sciences are deepened and expanded in close relation to the lessons taught. Pedagogical training takes place at teacher training colleges, which are subdivided according to school type, and at training schools.
The prerequisite for admission to the preparatory service is passing the first state examination for a teaching profession or an examination recognized as equivalent by the Hessian Teachers' Academy.
Those who have completed vocational training and have additional qualifications, such as a master craftsman examination or a final examination from a two-year technical college, can be admitted to the preparatory service for the acquisition of a teaching qualification in work-related subjects.
Information on this can be found on the websites of the responsible departments mentioned.
Recruitment to the preparatory service takes place every six months on May 1 and November 1. The application deadline (main procedure) for the recruitment date on May 1 is January 1, for the recruitment date on November 1 it is July 1.
