A license to practice can be granted for entry in the Register of Craftsmen in accordance with § 7b HwO if relevant training has been completed and at least 6 years of work as a journeyman including at least 4 years in a managerial position in the craft applied for or a related craft.
Once you have been granted a license to practice, you meet the registration requirements for a craft requiring a license in the register of craftsmen. A license does not entitle you to hold the title of master craftsman or to train in the relevant craft.
Tip: The trades requiring registration are listed in Annex A of the Crafts Code.
Please note: The following trades requiring a license are excluded from these regulations: chimney sweeps, opticians, hearing aid acousticians, orthopaedic technicians, orthopaedic shoemakers and dental technicians.
- Completed application form
- Proof of your training qualification (for example: journeyman's certificate)
- Proof of your professional experience and managerial activity (for example: qualified reference)
- Only a natural person may submit the application.
- A license to practice according to § 7b HwO is required:
- Completion of relevant training in the craft applied for or in a craft related to this craft. It is also possible for a foreign qualification to be recognized if it has been recognized by the competent authority as equivalent to a corresponding German qualification.
- In addition, at least 6 years of work as a journeyman including at least 4 years in a managerial position in the craft applied for, a related craft or a profession corresponding to the craft. The activity performed must have included at least one significant activity in the craft requiring a license for which the license was applied for. A managerial position can be assumed if you have been given independent decision-making powers in a business or in a significant part of a business. If there is no proof of the required commercial and general legal expertise, this can be provided, for example, by attending training courses.
The fee for issuing an exercise authorization is 650.00 euros. If the application is rejected or withdrawn before a decision has been made, a processing fee will also be charged.
You must submit the application for a license to practice to the relevant Chamber of Skilled Crafts together with all documents supporting the application.
If you agree to this, the Chamber of Skilled Crafts can obtain a statement on your application from the relevant guild or professional association.
After you have received the license to practice, you can be entered in the register of craftsmen or you can take up a position as a technical manager in another company.
