Do you use a motor vehicle and would like to equip it with a cornering assistance system? Or would you like to buy a vehicle equipped with such a system? Then you may be eligible for a grant under certain conditions.
Turn assist systems monitor the area on the right-hand side of a vehicle when turning right. If there is a pedestrian there, for example, the driver is warned. These systems are also known as turning assistants and are designed to increase road safety.
You can apply to the Federal Office of Logistics and Mobility (BALM) for a grant (funding) for turning assistance systems for motor vehicles.
Applications can be submitted by
- Owners, keepers, lessees and renters of:
- eligible motor vehicles,
- which are registered in Germany
- are registered for use on public roads.
- eligible motor vehicles,
Funding is available for
- system and external installation costs when retrofitting motor vehicles
- as well as the system costs for equipping new vehicles
System costs include the costs for the turn-off assistance system including the necessary cabling.
External installation costs include the costs for installing the system as well as the costs for technical approval and entry in the registration certificate Part I.
You receive the subsidy as partial financing. This means that they receive the money in the form of a non-repayable grant. You may only start installing the cornering assistance system after you have submitted the application.
The grant amounts to a maximum of 80 percent of the eligible expenditure. The maximum amount is EUR 1,500 per individual measure. For each eligible person, a maximum of 10 individual measures per year are eligible for funding. Exceptions and all other details are regulated by the funding guideline for equipping motor vehicles with turning assistance systems.
Eligible for funding are
- Owners and keepers
- lessees and renters
of eligible motor vehicles registered for use on public roads in the Federal Republic of Germany.
Eligible motor vehicles within the meaning of these guidelines are
- Commercial vehicles with a maximum permissible mass of more than 3.5 tons
- Buses and coaches with more than 9 seats, including the driver's seat
The motor vehicles must
- be registered for use on public roads and
- be purchased and operated for commercial, freelance, non-profit or public-law activities.
Submit your application online to the Federal Office of Logistics and Mobility (BALM).
- Call up the AAS (turn-off assistance systems) funding program in the BALM application portal.
- First save the blank forms on your computer. These forms can only be opened and filled in digitally with the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
- Fill in the forms according to the instructions.
- Print out the control form, sign it and then scan it as an attachment.
- Then upload the application documents.
- BALM will check your application and then send you a grant notification or a rejection notice.

Earmarking
The turn-off assistance systems must be used for their intended purpose and handled with care. You must notify BALM immediately of any deviation from this during the period of earmarking. This includes
- technical shutdown
- removal
- sale or scrapping of the subsidized vehicle
- premature termination of leasing or rental contracts
- Non-use for other reasons
Non-appropriate use may lead to partial revocation of the grant notification and partial repayment of the grant awarded.
Approval period
The approval period generally ends 5 months after receipt of the grant notification; an extension of the approval period is possible on request. You must carry out the measure and submit the proof of use by this date at the latest.
