Anyone wishing to breed or keep vertebrates or cephalopods intended to be used in animal experiments or whose organs or tissues are intended to be used for scientific purposes, including for the purpose of supplying these animals to third parties, requires the permission of the competent authority.

Animal experiments are interventions or treatments

• for experimental purposes on animals if they may be associated with pain, suffering or harm to these animals

• for experimental purposes on animals that may result in the birth or hatching of animals that suffer pain, suffering or harm

• for experimental purposes on the genetic material of animals if they may cause pain, suffering or harm to the genetically modified animals or their carriers

• which are carried out for the production, extraction, storage or propagation of substances, products or organisms

• by which organs or tissues are removed in whole or in part for scientific purposes or for the purposes of education, training or further training

In order to obtain a permit, you generally have to provide proof of your expertise in handling the respective animals and your reliability. In addition, the permit and the conditions are tailored to the individual case.

Once you have submitted the application with the required documents, the responsible office will make a decision in a timely manner.
