Your intermediate examination takes place approximately halfway through the training period. The intermediate examination is a knowledge assessment and is intended to provide you and the training company with feedback on the knowledge you have acquired to date.
Your intermediate examination covers the skills, knowledge and abilities stipulated in the training regulations as well as the subject matter taught at vocational school. The intermediate examination is intended to give you as a trainee and your training company an impression of your current level of performance.
Participation in the intermediate examination is mandatory for you as a trainee. An exception to this may be if
- you have already completed another apprenticeship of at least 2 years in your training relationship or
- your training provides for a two-part final examination at different times ("extended final examination").
Among other things, the intermediate examination differs from the two-part final examination - the grade of the intermediate examination is not included in the final grade.
The results are an important indicator for you if you want to be admitted to the final examination early.
The intermediate examination takes place for all trainees around halfway through the training period. It is carried out by the responsible body, usually a chamber. An exception to this is if another body has been appointed by the state or federal government. Another exception is the public service and religious communities under public law. In these cases, please contact your training provider to find out which body is responsible.
The date is specified in the training regulations. If there are none, the responsible body will inform you of the date. Your training company will be notified of the examination by the responsible body in a letter or electronically.
The intermediate examination is organized by the regional office responsible in consultation with the examination board. The examination board consists of employer, employee and teacher representatives. It examines and assesses your examination performance.
The examination results determined by the examination board will be forwarded to the competent authority. You will receive the results in the form of a certificate of participation.
If you are a participant in a retraining course, you will also be admitted after submitting an application.

The examination fee is based on the respective fee regulations of the responsible regional authority.
For trainees, the costs are usually borne by the training company.
Participants in retraining courses may be able to receive funding from the employment agency or with the help of the training provider.
As a rule, the responsible office will notify your trainer of the upcoming intermediate examination.
After registering for the intermediate examination, you will receive an invitation to all parts of the examination.
The entire procedure for the intermediate examination, including registration, invitation, completion of all parts of the examination, determination of results and dispatch of the certificate of participation, takes approximately 5 months.
The registration deadline varies greatly. Please contact your training provider or the regional office responsible.
In some training occupations, the introduction of the "extended final examination" means that intermediate examinations are no longer held, but are replaced by a final examination in two parts.
