If you would like to use the job title of veterinary technical assistant, you need a special permit in accordance with the law on technical assistants in medicine.

With this permit, you can use the job title "veterinary medical technical assistant" and work in the profession.

Veterinary medical technical assistants (VMTA) carry out laboratory tests to diagnose animal diseases and epizootics and to test foodstuffs that come from animals.

The basis for practicing the profession of veterinary medical technical assistant is the completion of the prescribed training and passing the state examination in accordance with the training and examination regulations for technical assistants in medicine.

• Marriage certificate (if your name has changed due to marriage)

• Proof of your professional qualifications (e.g. certificates, professional certificate)

• Proof of your relevant professional experience as a veterinary technical assistant
• Proof of other relevant knowledge for working as a veterinary technical assistant

Proof of your personal suitability:

• Official certificate of good conduct of document type OE for submission to authorities, not older than 3 months when the permit is issued.
• Criminal record extract or certificate of good conduct from your country of origin. The certificate must not be older than 3 months at the time of application.
• Proof of your health suitability: Medical certificate. The certificate must not be older than 3 months at the time of application.
• Proof of your German language skills: Language certificate

The permit will be issued to you if you

• have completed the prescribed training and passed the state examination,
• you have not been guilty of any conduct that makes you unreliable to practise the profession,
• you are not unfit in terms of health to practise the profession and
• have the knowledge of the German language required for practicing the profession.

Is based on the respective administrative fee schedule of the federal state or on the fee statutes of the authorities responsible under federal state law.

You must apply for the permit from the competent authority.

Once you have submitted the application and all documents are complete, the competent authority will check whether you meet all the requirements.

If you meet all the requirements, you will receive the permit.

You may only start working once you have received the permit.

If the documents are complete, the procedure takes a maximum of 4 months.

Comparable training qualifications obtained outside Germany can be recognized as equivalent. If you have completed the relevant training outside Germany, you may be able to work temporarily and occasionally as a service provider in Germany without a permit (in accordance with EU law)
