You can obtain a residence permit for a study-related internship in the European Union ("study-related internship EU") if you meet certain requirements.
You can obtain a residence permit for a study-related internship in the EU if you
- have obtained a university degree in a third country in the last 2 years before submitting your application or
- are still studying for a university degree in a third country.
A third country is a country outside the EU and the European Economic Area (EEA).
A higher education institution is any educational institution that offers a degree that is comparable to a higher education degree that could be obtained in Germany. Comparability is based on the assessment recommendations of the Central Office for Foreign Education. The internship must correspond in terms of subject and level to the degree course or university degree.
You cannot take up employment during your stay.
If you have not yet reached the age of 18, the person entitled to take care of you must agree to your planned stay.
The residence permit for a study-related internship is limited in time. It is issued for the agreed duration of the internship, but for a maximum of 6 months.

Persons from abroad can obtain a residence permit if they
- are studying at a university in a third country
- have obtained a university degree in the last 2 years before submitting the application,
- would like to complete an internship in Germany and have already concluded an internship agreement with a German institution

- Internship must correspond to the subject of the (completed) course of study

The host institution must undertake to bear the costs incurred by public bodies up to 6 months after the end of the internship agreement for
- living expenses of the person from abroad during an unauthorized stay in Germany and
- deportation
- Internship must be equivalent in terms of subject and level to the course of study or university degree
- It is not possible to take up employment during the stay
- Temporary residence permit for the agreed duration of the internship, but for a maximum of 6 months
- Minors require the consent of a person entitled to personal care if they plan to stay for the purpose of a study-related internship
- A fee is payable for the issue of the residence permit; the time and form of payment vary depending on the authority
