You can obtain a residence permit to prepare for and study at university if you meet certain requirements.
You can obtain a residence permit for the purpose of studying if you wish to study in Germany and have been admitted to a state-recognized university or comparable educational institution in Germany. The course of study must be full-time.
The purpose of your stay also includes preparatory study measures. These are
- attending a preparatory language course if you have already been admitted to university and admission is conditional on attending a preparatory course, and
- attending a preparatory college or a comparable institution if a place is guaranteed.
The residence permit for the purpose of studying is limited in time.
With your residence permit for the purpose of studying, you may work for up to 120 days or 240 half days per year or take on a part-time student job. You are not allowed to work during preparatory study measures in the first year, except during vacation periods.
The procedure is usually conducted in German. If your knowledge of German is insufficient, you can use the help of a translator.
- Appeal against the decision of the foreigners authority within one month of notification
- Action before the court named in the notice of appeal if the appeal is not granted
- Persons from abroad who wish to study in Germany can obtain a residence permit for the purpose of studying if they have been admitted to a state-recognized higher education institution in Germany

The purpose of residence for the purpose of studying also includes the completion of a compulsory internship and preparatory study measures, for example:
- attending a preparatory language course if you have already been admitted to a full-time course of study
- attending a preparatory college or a comparable institution if a secure place is already available
- Residence permits are issued for a minimum of one year and generally for a maximum of two years, or for the duration of the course of study
- in the case of participation in an EU or multilateral program with mobility measures (e.g. ERASMUS+ program of the European Union) or if an agreement between 2 or more higher education institutions applies to the person from abroad, the residence permit is issued for at least 2 years, or for the duration of the course of study
- Residence permit entitles the holder to work for up to 120 days or 240 half days per year and to carry out secondary student activities; this does not apply during the stay for study preparation measures in the first year of the stay, except during the vacation period
